Union Catalog (with ILL)

SCOOLS

The "SCOOLS" (South Central Organization of Library Systems) initiative pioneered the development of this open source library automation initiative. Six New York State School Library Systems developed a union catalog to provide Web-based, almost paperless, managed interlibrary loan services for approximately 300 schools in their regions. The database now houses more than a million titles (3 million plus holdings), and uses the Internet to communicate and manage the ILL process. The only paper required is the packing list that a responding library prints. It includes the ship to and from addresses (that are in the system's directories) and the items shipped, that is placed in a window enveloped and attached to the item shipped. An email message lets the requester know that the item is in transit.
